11 Nigerian Military personnel detained in Burkina Faso over Airspace violation after the alleged Coup in Benin broke out.
Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso – A diplomatic standoff is brewing as 11 Nigerian military personnel are currently being detained in Burkina Faso following an alleged violation of the airspace of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
According to official reports from AES, a Nigerian C130 military cargo aircraft entered the confederation’s airspace without prior diplomatic clearance.
The aircraft, which was reportedly conducting an emergency landing, touched down in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso.

Authorities in Burkina Faso have detained the 11 Nigerian crew members onboard and are demanding a formal explanation from the Nigerian government regarding the incident.
The West African nation has declined to release the personnel until Abuja provides clarity on the purpose and circumstances of the unauthorized flight.
The incident has heightened tensions between Nigeria and the AES bloc—comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—especially amid growing concerns over regional security and sovereignty.
It also underscores the increasing sensitivity surrounding military operations and cross-border coordination in the Sahel region.
