A robbery attempt at Darkuman was disrupted on Tuesday after a private driver accidentally intercepted two armed suspects fleeing the scene of an attack on a mobile money (MoMo) vendor.

According to eyewitness accounts, the suspects had assaulted the vendor and made away with a cash sum of GH¢7,700 before attempting to escape through nearby streets.

In the course of their flight, they ran into an oncoming vehicle. The driver, sensing that something was amiss, slowed down and blocked their path, drawing the attention of passersby.

The sudden intervention caused the suspects to scatter. One of them managed to escape amid the confusion.

His accomplice, however, was overpowered by members of the public who had converged at the scene after hearing shouts for help.

The suspect was restrained by the crowd as tempers flared, leading to a brief episode of mob action before order was restored.

Police officers later arrived at the location and took custody of the apprehended suspect for further investigation.

The stolen money was reportedly recovered, though authorities are yet to issue an official confirmation on the exact amount retrieved. Efforts are ongoing to track down the second suspect who remains at large.

The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of mobile money vendors, particularly in densely populated urban areas where such operators are frequently targeted by criminals due to their handling of cash.

Residents of Darkuman have called for increased police patrols and improved community vigilance to deter similar attacks.

Police have appealed to the public to avoid mob justice and instead hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies.
