Matron Arrested After Alleged Machete Attack on 12-Year-Old Son in Afram Plains

A 38-year-old matron, identified as Madam Mavis Vinyo, has been arrested by police following an alleged machete attack on her 12-year-old son at St. Mary’s Vocational Institute in the Eastern Region.

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred at the school’s premises in Afram Plains North.

The boy allegedly picked up his mother’s mobile phone to play music while she was cooking.

This reportedly angered Madam Vinyo, who is said to have disciplined the child physically.

The situation then escalated when she allegedly struck him with a machete she had been using in the kitchen.

The injured child sustained serious wounds and was promptly assisted by the school’s security officer, who rushed him to Donkorkrom Presbyterian Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Hospital sources indicate that the boy is currently receiving care and is under close medical observation.

The police in Afram Plains North have confirmed the arrest of Madam Vinyo and stated that she is currently in custody, assisting with investigations. Authorities say she will be arraigned before a competent court in the coming days as investigations continue.

The incident has sparked public concern and renewed discussions about child protection, discipline, and domestic violence, particularly within school and caregiving environments.

Child rights advocates have called for thorough investigations and appropriate legal action, stressing that acts of violence against children must be firmly addressed under the law.
