A patient receiving treatment at the Awutu Beraku Health Centre has died after collapsing shortly after leaving the facility to buy sachet water.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 21. The man, believed to be in his 50s and yet to be identified, reportedly left the health centre to purchase water at the nearby Breku lorry station.

After buying the water, he collapsed beside a parked truck near the Awutu Beraku Police Station, approximately 15 metres from the health facility.

Eyewitnesses say several bystanders immediately alerted both the police and health workers.

However, they claim no prompt medical assistance was provided before the man died.

Some witnesses alleged that health staff initially assumed the patient had absconded from the facility because his medical folder remained there.

One eyewitness recounted that the man collapsed shortly after drinking the water and had visible medical attachments, including a plaster and a cannula on his arm. Despite repeated alerts, assistance reportedly came too late.

Residents who witnessed the incident have strongly criticised what they described as a slow and uncoordinated response by both health workers and the police.

They are calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

The police have since conveyed the body to the mortuary for preservation, pending identification and the arrival of the deceased’s family.
