A Nigerian woman has sparked intense online debate after expressing a firm stance on financial responsibility in romantic relationships, particularly during the dating phase.
In a widely circulated statement, she argued that a man who assumes full financial responsibility for a girlfriend before marriage is being irresponsible.
According to her, a partner should not be treated as a dependent, stressing that women must have their own sources of income and independence.

She warned that marrying someone who relies entirely on a partner financially could become a long-term burden, potentially extending to the woman’s family and leading to financial strain.
Drawing from personal experience, she explained that her father died when she was young, but her mother’s ability to work and earn income made it possible to raise and educate her.
She used this example to highlight the risks faced by families when women lack financial stability.
While clarifying that she does not support strict “50/50” financial arrangements in relationships, she emphasized the importance of mutual support rather than total responsibility.

In her view, assistance should be voluntary and shared, not an obligation placed solely on one partner.
