The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the unlawful possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following a targeted operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was apprehended on 26 January 2026 while driving a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25.
He was intercepted by a police snap-check team stationed at the Asanso checkpoint.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of nine nylon sacks concealed inside the bus.

Upon inspection, the sacks were found to contain dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.
Further examination revealed a total of 713 compressed slabs of the suspected substance.
Police sources indicate that during the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with GH¢150,000.00 in an effort to evade arrest.
The officers reportedly declined the offer and proceeded with due process.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations.
The police are working to determine the origin of the suspected narcotic drugs and to identify and apprehend other individuals who may be linked to the operation.
