The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has uncovered a large illegal mining site at Mampong Sankubiase in the Atiwa West District.
The discovery was made during a targeted operation conducted on Saturday, January 31.
According to officials, the operation exposed extensive unlawful mining activities along the Asu-Kawkaw Stream and the Subi Teyam Stream, both of which serve as vital water sources for surrounding communities.

Preliminary assessments indicate that the activities had significantly degraded the streams, with visible siltation, pollution, and destruction of riverbanks caused by unregulated excavation and the use of heavy machinery.
Personnel involved in the operation reportedly seized mining equipment found at the site, while investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute the individuals behind the illegal activities.
NAIMOS emphasized that the operation forms part of a broader national effort to clamp down on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which continues to threaten Ghana’s water bodies, forest reserves, and livelihoods.
The Secretariat reiterated its commitment to sustained enforcement and called on local residents to cooperate by reporting suspected illegal mining activities.
