Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has announced that the government is considering renaming Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, a move that could mark a significant shift in how Ghana represents its national identity through public institutions.

According to the Majority Leader, the proposed change forms part of broader efforts by the government to align national symbols with Ghana’s democratic values and contemporary identity.

He explained that the initiative is not arbitrary, stressing that a formal bill would be laid before Parliament of Ghana and processed in accordance with constitutional and legislative procedures.

Mahama Ayariga emphasised that decisions of this nature must be firmly rooted in law and guided by the collective will of the Ghanaian people. He noted that Parliament will play a central role in debating the proposal, allowing for transparency, public input, and institutional oversight.

The planned renaming is expected to spark nationwide discussion, particularly due to the historical weight attached to the airport’s current name.

Many observers anticipate robust debate on issues of history, legacy, and national values once the bill is formally introduced.
