A South Sudanese man, Thon Chol, has married his bride after paying an extraordinary dowry that included $77,000 in cash, 297 cows, and several plots of land, drawing widespread attention both locally and online.
According to reports, the marriage followed intense competition from a rival suitor who had offered $25,000 and 158 cows.
Thon Chol ultimately outbid his competitor, securing the union in what many have described as one of the most expensive traditional marriage arrangements in recent times.

The couple were later joined in a lavish wedding ceremony attended by family members, community leaders, and well-wishers, celebrating the successful conclusion of the high-stakes negotiations.
In many parts of South Sudan, bride price remains a deeply rooted cultural practice, often symbolizing respect for the bride’s family and the groom’s ability to provide.
However, the scale of this particular dowry has reignited debate about the rising cost of marriage and its social and economic implications.
