North East Region: One Dead, Several Injured as Truck Plunges into Broken Bridge in North East Region

A tragic accident occurred on Monday night when a cargo truck transporting passengers and goods from Gbandri Market plunged into a broken bridge between Jimbale and Wawa in the Yonyoo Nasuwani District of the North East Region, resulting in one death and several injuries.

The incident happened on 27th November, 2025 at approximately 9:00 p.m. when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to cross the damaged section of the bridge.

The truck, heavily loaded with market goods and commuters, crashed into the broken span, causing chaos and panic among passengers and nearby residents.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying. One resident, identified as Nicholas, told reporters that the bridge has been in a state of disrepair for nearly four years and referred to it as a “death trap” that local authorities have continuously neglected.

Emergency services responded to the scene and transported the deceased and injured victims to the Bunkpurugu Hospital.

Medical personnel confirm that several of the injured are in critical condition and receiving ongoing treatment.

The incident has renewed concerns among residents about the poor state of infrastructure in the district.

Community leaders and residents are once again calling on the government and relevant agencies to take immediate action to repair the bridge and prevent future tragedies.

As of now, the Ghana Police Service has not released an official statement on the accident, but investigations are expected to determine whether negligence or mechanical failure contributed to the crash.

The tragedy underscores the urgent need for infrastructure rehabilitation in rural areas, particularly in districts that rely on market routes for economic survival.
