Central Vietnam is grappling with severe flooding and unrelenting rains that have claimed the lives of at least 41 people, with nine others still reported missing, according to local state media.

Since the weekend, torrential downpours have caused widespread devastation, submerging more than 52,000 homes and cutting off power to approximately half a million households and businesses.

The country’s meteorological agencies report that rainfall in several regions has exceeded 1.5 meters (5 feet) over the past three days, with floodwaters in some areas surpassing the catastrophic 5.2-meter peak recorded during the 1993 floods.

The country recently endured the impacts of Typhoons Kalmaegi and Bualoi, which struck within weeks of each other, leaving a trail of destruction and exacerbating the region’s vulnerability to natural calamities.

Government agencies are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain on high alert and to follow evacuation and safety directives. Meanwhile, disaster management officials are calling for enhanced climate resilience strategies to address the increasing frequency and severity of weather-related disasters in the region.
