The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has revealed a disturbing increase in violent crime, with over 628 robbery incidents and 340 gun-related murders recorded across the country as of July 2025.
Addressing stakeholders during a recent security briefing, the Interior Minister noted that the figures represent a growing threat to public safety, fueled in part by the proliferation of illegal firearms in the country.
According to Hon. Muntaka, the 628 robberies involved the use of weapons, indicating a trend of increasing violence during such attacks.

The 340 murder cases were directly linked to the use of firearms, highlighting the urgent need for action to address the circulation and misuse of weapons among civilians.

Minister Muntaka emphasized that the government is committed to enhancing security across the country and called for greater public cooperation.
He also reiterated the importance of strengthening intelligence gathering, community policing, and enforcing stricter penalties for illegal arms possession.
Security experts have urged the government to intensify its efforts in addressing the root causes of violent crime, including unemployment, youth marginalization, and weak enforcement mechanisms.
The Interior Ministry has assured the public of its resolve to restore public safety and stability, and called on citizens to support law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities and voluntarily surrendering unlicensed weapons.
