Guinea-Bissau is reportedly facing a political crisis following what appears to be a coup d’état.
According to reports by Jeune Afrique Magazine, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has been arrested by military forces amid heightened tensions in the capital.
The incident allegedly occurred on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, around 1:00 p.m. while President Embaló was in his office at the presidential palace.

He confirmed his detention in a statement, indicating that no physical force was used during the arrest.
He attributed the move to the army’s Chief of Staff, describing it as a coup attempt.
Gunshots were reportedly heard near the electoral commission headquarters, raising fears of instability.
The situation follows last Sunday’s presidential election, where the outgoing president claimed victory with 65% of the votes, based on his own tally.

In addition to the president, several top officials, including the Armed Forces’ Chief of Staff, the Interior Minister, and the Deputy Chief of Staff, are said to have been detained.
