The definitive Daddy Lumba marriage ruling was delivered at the Kumasi High Court today. Immediately, the judge declared Akosua Serwaa and Priscilla Ofori Atta as legitimate spouses. Specifically, the court recognized both women as surviving widows under customary law. However, the judge dismissed Akosua Serwaa’s claim of a sole ordinance marriage. Consequently, the court invalidated the exclusivity of her 1992 German marriage certificate. Therefore, she cannot claim to be the only legal wife.
Previously, her legal team had threatened serious actions against Odo Broni. Explicitly, lawyer Kusi William warned of potential bigamy charges before the verdict. He argued that any second marriage certificate would constitute a criminal offence. Yet, the Daddy Lumba marriage ruling has effectively nullified those threats. Now, the focus shifts entirely to the family’s internal decisions. Accordingly, the lawyer confirmed that the family will direct the funeral arrangements. Thus, the traditional elders will decide who performs the widowhood rites.

Moreover, the decision highlights the complexities of unregistered foreign ordinance marriages. Essentially, the court emphasized the validity of Ghana’s customary polygamous laws. Also, legal experts had earlier questioned the validity of the bigamy threats. Notably, they argued that death legally ends a marriage anyway. Ultimately, this judgment brings closure to the intense public rivalry. Finally, both women must now cooperate to honor the Highlife legend.
