A Circuit Court in Tema has sentenced two police officers to a combined 13 years in prison for unlawful possession and conspiracy to traffic narcotic substances.

The ruling, delivered this week, underscores growing concerns over law enforcement officers’ involvement in criminal activities they are mandated to prevent.

The convicted officers, whose identities are being withheld for security reasons, were arrested following intelligence-led operations that exposed their involvement in drug-related activities.

The court found them guilty of conspiring to traffic narcotics and unlawfully possessing banned substances, contrary to Ghana’s Narcotic Control Commission Act.

According to prosecution details presented in court, the officers were apprehended during a surveillance operation after attempts were made to transport the narcotics under the guise of official police work.

Upon their arrest, quantities of the illicit drugs were discovered in their possession, prompting immediate disciplinary and legal proceedings.

Delivering the judgment, the presiding judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense, especially given the accused persons’ roles as law enforcers.

The court noted that their actions undermined public trust in the Ghana Police Service and sent a dangerous signal about systemic vulnerability to corruption.
