ECOWAS Strongly Condemns Attempted Coup in Benin

ECOWAS strongly condemns sttempted Coup in Benin, pledges full support to Democratic Government to have its way in the country.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a strong condemnation following reports of an attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin.

In a formal statement released today, the regional bloc expressed “consternation” over the unconstitutional move, describing it as a direct subversion of the will of the Beninese people.

ECOWAS reaffirmed its unwavering support for the constitutional order in Benin and commended the swift response of the Government and the Republican Army in regaining control and restoring stability.

The Commission emphasized the need for the full respect of Benin’s Constitution and democratic institutions.

The statement warned that ECOWAS holds the perpetrators of the attempted coup both “individually and collectively responsible” for any loss of life or damage to property resulting from their actions.

In a significant development, ECOWAS pledged to stand with the Government and the people of Benin “in all forms necessary,” including the potential deployment of the regional standby force, to protect the country’s constitutional order and territorial integrity.

This declaration underscores ECOWAS’s growing stance against unconstitutional changes of government in the region, as West Africa has seen a troubling resurgence of military coups in recent years.
