Speaking to local media, Ms. Laryea revealed that she had suffered continuous emotional and physical abuse during her relationship with the officer.
She explained that despite ending the relationship for her own safety, the abuse has persisted, culminating in the violent assault caught on camera.
“This is not the first time,” she said. “I’ve been enduring this for a long time. I broke up with him to protect myself, but he keeps coming after me. I’ve lived in fear.”
The Ghana Immigration Service is yet to release an official statement on the matter, but there are growing calls for the service to suspend the officer and open a full investigation.
Human rights groups and gender advocates are urging law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served and to take stronger action against gender-based violence, especially when committed by officers in uniform.
