Breaking: 30 Pregnant Women Tested Positive for HIV in Ayensuano District [Details]

According to report, 30 pregnant women tested positive for HIV in Ayensuano District in the Eastern Region.

The Ayensuano District Health Directorate has raised concerns over the increasing number of HIV cases recorded in the area, especially among pregnant women.

Between January and October 2025, a total of 30 pregnant women tested positive for HIV, representing 1.9% of the 1,571 expectant mothers screened during antenatal care.

In addition to this, the district also recorded 76 new HIV cases out of 2,910 individuals tested within the same period.

This development brings the cumulative number of people living with HIV in the district to 628.

Worryingly, only about 250 of those living with the virus are currently receiving Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), raising concerns over treatment coverage and adherence.

Health officials describe the situation as alarming, especially given the implications of mother-to-child transmission if preventive measures are not scaled up.

The Health Directorate is calling for intensified public education, voluntary testing, and consistent follow-up care to manage and reduce new infections.

Efforts are also underway to improve access to ART and eliminate the stigma associated with HIV, which remains a barrier to treatment uptake in many rural communities.

The district health authorities are urging community leaders, religious bodies, and civil society to support awareness campaigns to reduce the spread of HIV and encourage early testing and treatment.
