The Ghana National Theatre, an iconic structure located in Accra, was originally built and gifted by China in 1992. Over the years, the facility has served as a central venue for performing arts, including drama, music, dance, and other cultural events.

However, the structure has faced deterioration due to age and limited maintenance, prompting calls for refurbishment.

The $30 million pledge is expected to cover structural renovations, technological upgrades, and improvements to seating, lighting, sound systems, and accessibility.

The renovation will help reposition the theatre as a modern hub for both local and international artistic expression.

Chinese officials noted that this initiative is part of a broader effort to deepen diplomatic and cultural cooperation between China and Ghana.

The pledge also reflects China’s commitment to investing in Africa’s creative economy and preserving shared legacies.

Ghanaian authorities have expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as timely and transformative.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture is expected to collaborate closely with Chinese partners to oversee the renovation process and ensure it meets international standards.

The project is anticipated to begin in 2026 and will not only rejuvenate the theatre but also create jobs and economic opportunities in the arts and construction sectors.
