Breaking News: Constitutional Review Committee Recommends Extension of Presidential Term from Four to Five Years

1

In a significant development that could reshape Ghana’s democratic structure, the Constitutional Review Committee has recommended an extension of the presidential term of office from four to five years.

The proposal, which forms part of a broader set of recommendations aimed at amending key aspects of the 1992 Constitution, is intended to enhance governance stability, policy continuity, and long-term national development planning.

According to sources familiar with the committee’s work, the recommendation follows months of extensive consultations with political stakeholders, civil society organizations, legal experts, and the general public.

The committee observed that the current four-year term limits the ability of sitting presidents to fully implement their development agendas, as a significant portion of the term is often consumed by political campaigning and administrative transitions.

Under the proposed amendment, a president would serve a five-year term with the possibility of re-election for a second and final term maintaining the two-term limit enshrined in the constitution.

The recommendation is expected to generate significant national debate, with some welcoming the idea as a pragmatic step toward strengthening leadership effectiveness, while others may raise concerns about potential abuse of power or weakening of democratic checks.

The final decision on the recommendation lies with Parliament and, ultimately, the people of Ghana, who would vote in a referendum should the proposal advance through legislative processes.
