Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Hon. Kofi Adams, has announced that Ghana is set to direct 9 million received from FIFA following its participation in the World Cup into the newly established National Sports Fund barring any unforeseen expenditures.
Speaking in an interview, Hon. Adams explained that proceeds from international competitions such as the World Cup would serve as a key revenue stream for the Sports Fund, which is aimed at supporting and developing sports across the country.
“One of the sources is proceeds from competitions and tournaments. For example, what FIFA is going to give us as a country is 9 million. The1.5 million is for preparation, so that will go into preparation. But the $9 million would go into the fund,” he stated.

He noted, however, that deductions may be made from the amount if there are any additional costs incurred by the Ghana Football Association or the state during the tournament. “Unless we incur some other cost that we just have to deduct from it. If we don’t, we are going to put everything into the fund,” he clarified.
The establishment of the National Sports Fund is part of Ghana’s broader strategy to create sustainable financing for all sporting disciplines, reduce over-reliance on government subventions, and promote the holistic growth of sports infrastructure, talent development, and competitions nationwide.

The move has been welcomed by sports analysts and stakeholders, who believe it could provide a more structured and transparent way of funding sports in Ghana if managed effectively.
