In a dramatic turn of events during proceedings in the ongoing Abu Trica extradition case, the lawyer for the second accused, Robert Ishmael Aggrey Amissah, has likened the courtroom experience to facing “Pontius Pilate,” following a surprising judicial decision.
According to Mr. Amissah, the Attorney General’s office had filed a formal request to discontinue the case against the second and third accused persons.
However, the sitting-in judge declined to grant the state’s request and instead recused herself from the matter, stating she was “washing her hands off the case.”
The remark by the defense counsel — “We have come to meet Pontius Pilate in court today” — drew attention to the tense and unexpected twist in court.

The comparison to the biblical figure Pontius Pilate, who infamously distanced himself from the fate of Jesus Christ, highlights the lawyer’s frustration over the judge’s refusal to act on the state’s clear intention to withdraw the charges.
The court had been hearing the case involving the attempted extradition of popular socialite Abu Trica, in which three individuals were charged.
The state’s decision to drop charges against two of them was viewed by many as a potential breakthrough for the defense. However, the judge’s decision to recuse herself rather than grant the nolle prosequi filing has left legal observers and parties involved puzzled.
Legal analysts say the development could lead to a reassignment of the case or further administrative procedures before the matter is resolved.
Meanwhile, the defense has expressed disappointment and concern over the delay this decision may cause in securing justice for the affected parties.
