“Abu Trica faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted” according to EOCO.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), in collaboration with a multi-agency task force including the FBI, has arrested Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, for his alleged role in a sophisticated 8 million romance scam targeting elderly victims in the United States.

The arrest, which took place on Thursday, December 11, 2025, follows months of joint investigations between EOCO, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), INTERPOL, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), and the Office of the Attorney General.

According to EOCO, Abu Trica led a criminal network that used artificial intelligence software to create fake identities, build deceptive romantic relationships online, and defraud victims of money and valuables.

The victims were mostly elderly individuals from the U.S., who were manipulated through social media and dating platforms since 2023.

Authorities say Abu Trica will be extradited to the United States to face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, and other related offences.

If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

EOCO extended appreciation to its local and international partners, especially the FBI, for their support in executing the arrest and dismantling the cybercrime syndicate.
