A solemn funeral ceremony was thrown into turmoil on Saturday, November 29, 2025, when the Dompoasehene, Nana Kwabena Ponko, was shot in what is believed to be an attempted assassination.
The incident occurred during the final funeral rites for the late mother of the Obuasi West Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Kannin.
The respected traditional leader had just taken his seat at the event grounds in Obuasi when an unidentified assailant opened fire, striking him.

The shooting sparked immediate panic among mourners and disrupted the proceedings. Nana Kwabena Ponko was swiftly transported to the Obuasi Government Hospital, where he is receiving emergency medical care. His current condition remains undisclosed.
Thanks to the quick intervention of security personnel and attendees present at the funeral, the suspected gunman was subdued and arrested at the scene.
He has since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service and is currently in custody, assisting with investigations.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have assured the public of a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.
