Articulated Truck Overturns at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Causes Major Traffic Disruption

A major road incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, January 10, 2026, at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange (Circle) in Accra, as an articulated truck overturned, causing significant disruption to traffic flow and endangering pedestrians and commuters.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, which appeared to be carrying heavy cargo, lost control and somersaulted underneath the interchange bridge, landing on its side.

The cause of the accident is yet to be officially confirmed, but preliminary indications point to either brake failure or overspeeding.

The accident caused extensive damage to surrounding road infrastructure, including crash barriers and sections of the sidewalk.

Officers from the Ghana Police Service and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) swiftly arrived at the scene to secure the area and redirect traffic.

The overturned truck blocked a major lane, resulting in severe traffic congestion during the busy morning hours.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and city waste management teams were also deployed to clear debris and manage potential hazards from leaking fluids.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, including verification of the truck’s roadworthiness and the condition of its driver at the time of the crash.

Meanwhile, city officials are urging drivers to exercise caution, particularly when navigating high-traffic intersections like Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
