The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially destooled Nana Akyaa Panin, the Queen Mother of Apatrapa, following revelations that she is not of royal lineage — a key requirement for occupying such a traditional role within the Ashanti Kingdom.
The decision, which was announced during a sitting at the Manhyia Palace, brings an end to Nana Akyaa Panin’s 24-year reign as Queen Mother of the Apatrapa stool.
Her destoolment is based on findings from an inquiry which determined that her installation was contrary to the customs and traditions governing chieftaincy within the Ashanti Region.

According to palace sources, it came to light that Nana Akyaa Panin’s maternal lineage lacked the royal ancestry required to occupy the Queen Mother position, making her enstoolment null and void in the eyes of traditional law.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, known for his strict adherence to cultural integrity and the preservation of Asante customs, emphasized the need for due diligence in the nomination and installation of traditional leaders.
The destoolment paves the way for the selection and installation of a new Queen Mother, this time expected to be from the rightful royal lineage.
