A tragic road accident near the Obuasi Airport area has claimed the life of one member of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) taskforce, with four others sustaining serious injuries.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, while the taskforce was on route to execute a major anti-galamsey (illegal mining) operation in the Obuasi enclave a region noted for its ongoing challenges with illegal mining activities.

According to preliminary information, the NAIMOS team was undertaking a high-risk operation to clamp down on unauthorized mining sites when the accident occurred.

Though full details of the crash have yet to be released by authorities, eyewitnesses report that the vehicle carrying the officers veered off the road, possibly due to poor visibility or mechanical failure, and overturned.

Emergency response services quickly arrived at the scene to assist the victims. One officer was pronounced dead on the spot, while the remaining four were transported to a nearby medical facility in critical condition.

The identity of the deceased has not been officially disclosed, pending notification of the family.

However, the incident has drawn national concern, with many commending the bravery of the taskforce members and their continued efforts to combat environmental degradation caused by illegal mining.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, under which NAIMOS operates, is expected to issue a formal statement and may launch an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

This tragedy highlights the increasing risks associated with anti-galamsey operations in Ghana, where taskforces often navigate dangerous terrain and confront illegal miners operating with little regard for safety or regulation.

The government has reiterated its commitment to ending illegal mining and safeguarding the lives of security and enforcement personnel involved in the effort.
