Born on December 8, 1938, in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, John Kufuor hails from a royal lineage of the Ashanti Kingdom. He studied at Prempeh College and later pursued law at Lincoln’s Inn, London. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from the University of Oxford.

Political Career

Kufuor entered Ghana’s political scene in the 1960s, serving as Deputy Foreign Minister in the Progress Party government of Dr. K.A. Busia. After years of political turbulence in Ghana, he became the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and won the presidential election in 2000, defeating incumbent Jerry John Rawlings’ chosen successor, John Atta Mills.

Presidency (2001–2009)

During his presidency, Kufuor focused on economic stabilization, poverty reduction, education, and infrastructure development.

Under his leadership, Ghana benefited from the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative, which helped cancel significant portions of its debt. He also introduced the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), School Feeding Programme, and the Capitation Grant to support free basic education.

Kufuor championed democratic governance, press freedom, and rule of law, earning him respect both locally and internationally. Ghana’s economy experienced growth, and foreign investment increased under his tenure.
