The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has confirmed the arrest of two Chinese nationals for engaging in illegal mining activities at Pankese in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.

The arrest, which took place on Saturday, 3rd January 2026 at approximately 9:45 a.m., was carried out by a NAIMOS taskforce deployed in the region.

The two suspects, identified as Li Yongjin and Nou Chin Haw, were caught in the act of conducting illegal mining operations, commonly referred to as “galamsey.”

Their activities have reportedly caused extensive environmental damage, including the destruction of forest reserves and cocoa farmlands.

Additionally, their operations have resulted in the severe pollution of local water bodies, most notably the Birim River, a key water source for surrounding communities.

As part of the enforcement operation, the taskforce immobilized two excavators used by the suspects by dismantling key components such as monitors and control boards.

This action was taken due to the unavailability of a low-bed transport service at the time to move the heavy equipment from the site.

The team also destroyed various illegal mining tools and makeshift structures used to facilitate the operation.

Furthermore, a Toyota Tundra pickup truck with registration number AS 8120-20, believed to have been used by the suspects, was seized at the scene.

Authorities say the suspects are currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations. The operation forms part of NAIMOS’ continued efforts to combat illegal mining and its devastating effects on Ghana’s environment and natural resources.
