Farmers Protest Alleged Galamsey Activities on Cocoa Farms

A video circulating widely on social media has captured a group of angry cocoa farmers staging a protest against a local chief and a mining company over alleged illegal mining activities (commonly referred to as galamsey) on their farmlands.

The footage shows visibly distressed farmers, some wielding farming tools, expressing frustration over what they describe as an orchestrated plan to destroy their cocoa farms to make way for gold mining operations.

The farmers accuse the unnamed chief and a mining company of colluding to take over fertile cocoa lands for the purpose of gold extraction.

While the exact location of the incident is yet to be verified, the video has sparked concern and public outcry over the increasing encroachment of illegal mining into farmlands, particularly cocoa-producing areas. Ghana, one of the world’s leading cocoa exporters, has witnessed rising tension between smallholder farmers and illegal mining operators in recent years.

Community members seen in the video demand immediate government intervention and call on authorities to halt any mining activity threatening their livelihoods.

As of now, there has been no official response from the local chief or the alleged mining firm.

Authorities are urged to investigate the matter and ensure the protection of both the environment and the economic interests of affected farmers.
