Ghana Burkina Faso Roaming Deal Signs Free Calls for Travelers

The Ghana Burkina Faso roaming deal officially marks a new era of affordable communication for travelers between the two West African nations. Authorities from both countries signed this landmark agreement to eliminate surcharges on incoming calls and data usage while abroad. Consequently, citizens visiting either nation will soon pay local rates instead of expensive roaming fees.

Negotiators finalized this pact during the recent Digital Week in Ouagadougou. Specifically, the National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana and the Autorité de Régulation des Communications Électroniques et des Postes (ARCEP) of Burkina Faso led the discussions. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding that commits both nations to the “ECOWAS Free Roaming Initiative.”

Therefore, this agreement removes a major financial barrier for traders, tourists, and families. Previously, travelers faced high costs just to stay connected. Now, they can use their existing SIM cards across the border without worry. For example, a Ghanaian trader in Burkina Faso will receive calls for free and send messages at local Ghanaian rates. Meanwhile, Burkinabe visitors in Accra will enjoy the same benefits.

Officials have scheduled the commercial launch for April 2026. Between now and then, technical teams will test the networks to ensure seamless connectivity. Nevertheless, the signing itself represents a massive step forward. It completes Ghana’s goal of establishing free roaming with all its immediate neighbors, including Togo and Côte d’Ivoire.

Furthermore, leaders view this as a victory for regional integration. Suleman Salifu, the NCA Deputy Director General, praised the collaboration. He noted that the Ghana Burkina Faso roaming deal strengthens ties and boosts economic growth. Similarly, Patrice Compaoré of ARCEP highlighted how this move creates a borderless digital market. Ultimately, this partnership proves that African nations can successfully break down barriers to support their citizens.
