Ghana is preparing to roll out a significant regional transport initiative by the first quarter of 2026, with the launch of marine transport services along the West African coastline.
The new service will see two vessels operating along a strategic route from Ghana, through Togo and Benin, and terminating in Nigeria.
The vessels will ferry both passengers and cargo, offering a safer and more efficient alternative to road transport.

This maritime project is a key part of government efforts to boost regional integration and trade while easing pressure on overburdened road networks, particularly the busy Ghana-Nigeria corridor.
It also aligns with the broader goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), of which Ghana hosts the Secretariat.
According to transport ministry officials, the initiative will not only reduce transit time and road maintenance costs but also provide a more environmentally friendly option for regional logistics.
The two vessels, currently undergoing final preparations, are expected to be equipped with modern navigation systems and safety features to ensure smooth operations.
Stakeholders in the transport and logistics sectors across the sub-region have welcomed the move, anticipating reduced congestion at land borders, lower transport costs, and enhanced economic cooperation among coastal countries.

The success of this project could pave the way for further expansion of marine transport routes along the Gulf of Guinea, ultimately strengthening maritime trade and tourism in West Africa.
