The Government of Ghana has secured a significant $200 million funding package from the World Bank to eliminate the double-track system currently being used in some senior high schools across the country.

This was revealed by Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu.

Speaking on the matter, Mr. Iddrisu described the move as a critical intervention to restore normalcy to the educational calendar and improve quality learning outcomes for Ghanaian students.

The double-track system was introduced in 2018 as part of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy to accommodate increased enrolment numbers without a corresponding expansion in school infrastructure.

While the policy ensured access for many students, it has also faced criticism for its impact on instructional time and overall academic performance.

With this new financial support from the World Bank, the government is expected to invest in the construction of additional classroom blocks, dormitories, and teaching facilities to enable schools to return to a single-track academic calendar.

Haruna Iddrisu emphasized the need for transparency and efficiency in the disbursement and utilization of the funds, urging the Ministry of Education to ensure that the resources directly benefit infrastructure development in the most affected schools.

Educational stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that the funding will bring long-term relief to students, teachers, and parents alike.

The Ministry of Education is expected to outline the implementation plan and timeline for phasing out the double-track system in the coming weeks.
