Interior Minister Commissions Four New Patrol Boats to Enhance Ghana’s Maritime Security

In a significant move to strengthen Ghana’s maritime and inland waterway security, the Minister for the Interior has officially commissioned four new patrol boats to support the operations of the Ghana Police Marine Unit.

The commissioning ceremony, held at the Tema Naval Base, marks a major step in the government’s broader strategy to combat crimes along Ghana’s coastline and inland waterways, including smuggling, piracy, illegal fishing, and unauthorized border crossings.

The Interior Minister, in his address, highlighted the importance of securing the country’s maritime domain and inland water routes.

“These patrol boats will improve surveillance, enhance rapid response capability, and deter criminal activities that threaten our national security and economic interests,” he said.

The vessels are equipped with modern navigation systems, communication tools, and safety equipment to aid law enforcement operations on water bodies such as the Volta Lake, River Oti, and Ghana’s coastal stretch.

Officials from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Navy, and other security agencies attended the event, reaffirming their commitment to inter-agency collaboration in protecting Ghana’s territorial waters.

The initiative forms part of the government’s investment in security infrastructure, aimed at supporting the Police Transformation Agenda and ensuring public safety across all terrains land and water alike.

The newly commissioned boats are expected to be deployed immediately to key operational areas to support anti-smuggling patrols, rescue missions, and border surveillance.

This development aligns with Ghana’s national security strategy to safeguard maritime trade routes and promote safer navigation for fishing communities and transport operators.
