The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has intensified its enforcement efforts against illegal mining activities in the Ashanti Region, conducting coordinated operations at Edwinase and Wromanso along the River Offin.
The weekend exercise, carried out between February 14 and 15, targeted suspected illegal mining sites believed to be contributing to environmental degradation and water pollution in the area.
According to officials, the operation led to the confiscation of five excavators, three pump-action guns, pumping equipment, and quantities of ammunition.
Authorities also dismantled several washing plants, changfang machines, and makeshift structures reportedly being used to facilitate unauthorized mining along the riverbanks.

The destruction of these installations forms part of broader efforts to disrupt the logistical base of illegal mining networks.
NAIMOS officials emphasized that the renewed crackdown underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding water bodies and restoring degraded lands.
The River Offin, like many others in Ghana, has faced significant pollution challenges linked to illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey.”
Security agencies involved in the operation reaffirmed their resolve to sustain surveillance and enforcement activities across affected districts.
They also warned that individuals found engaging in illegal mining will face arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law.
