In a remarkable and historic move toward national unity and reconciliation, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has successfully mediated and ended the protracted chieftaincy conflict between the Kusasi and Mamprusi factions in Bawku.

The peace agreement was reached following a series of high-level dialogues facilitated by the Manhyia Palace, culminating in a final consensus on December 1, 2025.

The Bawku conflict, which has persisted for decades, has been rooted in competing claims over traditional leadership, leading to recurrent violence, loss of lives, and the stagnation of socio-economic development in the area.

Numerous attempts at resolution had failed until the intervention of the Asantehene.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, known for his leadership in peacebuilding across Ghana and West Africa, brought both factions to the negotiation table in a neutral and respected traditional setting.

After months of deliberation and careful consultation with traditional records, legal precedents, and community elders, a lasting agreement was reached.

Addressing the representatives of both Kusasi and Mamprusi groups at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo stated:

“This moment marks a new beginning for Bawku. Let us lay down past grievances and embrace a future rooted in unity, mutual respect, and development. Peace is the true inheritance we must give the next generation.”

Both sides committed to honoring the peace accord and pledged to work collaboratively in rebuilding trust and harmony in the region.

The National Peace Council, the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and regional security authorities have all expressed their support for the agreement and will assist in its implementation.

The government and civil society groups have praised the Asantehene for his exceptional leadership and dedication to national cohesion. The people of Bawku are hopeful that this peace will finally open the door to sustained development and social progress.
