Pastor Jailed for 519 Years for Defrauding by False Pretenses

The Accra High Court has sentenced Reverend Edward Asamoah Buabeng, Chief Executive Officer of the defunct Career Link Marketers Company Limited, to a cumulative 519 years in prison for fraud-related offences.

The judgment, delivered by Her Ladyship Justice Evelyn Asamoah, brings to an end a three-year trial during which the prosecution called 12 witnesses.

Reverend Buabeng was convicted on 173 counts of conspiracy to commit a crime and defrauding by false pretences.

In sentencing, the court imposed an eight-year prison term for each of the 173 counts.

However, the sentences are to run concurrently, meaning the convict will effectively serve an eight-year jail term.

Police investigations established that Reverend Buabeng went into hiding after receiving substantial investments from victims.

The total amount involved was approximately GH¢1,193,136 and US$185,408, collected from multiple complainants under false investment promises.

According to a report by The Chronicle newspaper, the sentencing took place on Monday, January 16, 2023, following the court’s finding that the accused deliberately deceived investors through his company.

The ruling underscores the judiciary’s stance against financial crimes and investment fraud in Ghana.
