The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has accused the government of using the justice system to target Chairman Wontumi, describing ongoing legal actions against the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman as politically motivated.
According to Yandoh, the prosecution is not merely a legal matter but part of a calculated effort to suppress dissent from the Ashanti Region, traditionally regarded as the NPP’s strongest political base.
He argued that Chairman Wontumi has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of the current administration, particularly on issues of governance, economic management, and alleged political victimisation.

Yandoh contended that the timing and intensity of the prosecution raise serious concerns about selective justice.
In his view, the government is attempting to intimidate opposition figures who command strong grassroots support and have the capacity to mobilise public opinion against perceived state excesses.
He warned that such actions, if unchecked, could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions and erode the principle of equal treatment under the law.
He further stressed that the Ashanti Region would not be cowed by what he described as harassment of its political leadership.
Rather than silencing critics, Yandoh claimed the move had strengthened the resolve of party supporters to resist what they see as abuse of power.
While acknowledging the importance of accountability and the rule of law, the NPP communicator insisted that law enforcement agencies must operate independently and transparently, free from political influence.
He called on civil society organisations, the media, and the wider public to closely monitor the case to ensure that justice is pursued fairly and not weaponised against political opponents.
The government has yet to formally respond to these allegations.
