Police Arrest 53-Year-Old Man for Death Threat and Illegal Firearm Possession in Accra

The Ghana Police Service, through the Accra Regional Police Command, has arrested a 53-year-old man for allegedly threatening death and unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition.

The suspect, identified as Seth Welbeck, was arrested on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, following court proceedings related to a forgery of documents case for which he had been issued a criminal summons to appear before the Accra Circuit Court.

According to a police press release, after the court session, the suspect requested permission from investigators to lock his vehicle while being escorted to the court cells.

During the process, he allegedly retrieved a Smith & Wesson SD9 VE pistol loaded with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition from the vehicle and pointed it at an investigator, issuing threats.

With the assistance of other court officials and witnesses, the investigator swiftly disarmed the suspect, preventing potential harm.

The firearm and ammunition were seized, and the suspect was immediately taken into custody.

Mr. Welbeck is currently in police custody assisting with investigations and is expected to be arraigned before court to face justice.

The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against acts of violence, threats, and the unlawful possession of firearms, stressing that such actions endanger lives and property.

The Police further urged the public to comply with lawful court processes, warning that any attempt to obstruct justice or intimidate public officers will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
