Police Retrieve Suspected Cannabis Worth Over GHS 1.4 Million from Impounded Truck in Oti Region

The Ghana Police Service in the Oti Region has uncovered a large consignment of suspected cannabis valued at more than GHS 1.4 million from an impounded Volvo truck intercepted at the Bonakye checkpoint.

According to a press release issued by the Regional Headquarters in Dambai on February 25, 2026, the truck, bearing registration number GC 3522-09, was stopped on December 29, 2025, while en route to Kpassa.

Acting on intelligence that the vehicle was transporting illicit goods, officers intercepted it; however, the driver and one other occupant fled the scene, abandoning the truck with the ignition key.

Following a court order issued by the Jasikan Circuit Court and presided over by His Honour Lambert Y. Kerieba, the vehicle was opened on February 24, 2026, at Nkwanta.

The exercise was conducted in the presence of representatives from the Police, Military, National Intelligence Bureau, Defence Intelligence, Ghana National Fire Service, the Narcotics Control Commission (Jasikan), and members of the media.

A search revealed 320 cartons of bottled mineral water concealing 91 bales of suspected cannabis, amounting to 7,173 slabs. The exhibits have been secured as investigations continue.

The Police have reaffirmed their commitment to combating drug trafficking and have urged the public to volunteer credible information to support crime prevention efforts.
