The passing of Zhong Qifeng, widely known in his local community as “Mr. Jonh,” marks the end of a dedicated life spent working in Ghana’s quarry industry. Mr. Qifeng, aged 56, was the manager at Abuba Quarry and had spent several years contributing to the country’s construction and mining sector.
Originally from China, Mr. Qifeng relocated to Ghana in search of opportunity and livelihood in the extractive industry, a path taken by many expatriates who have become integral to the country’s industrial operations.

Known by colleagues and workers for his diligence, discipline, and hands-on leadership, Mr. Qifeng was a familiar figure in the quarrying community.
Despite cultural and linguistic differences, he reportedly maintained a professional and cooperative relationship with local staff, overseeing daily operations and ensuring productivity and safety standards at the site.
His sudden demise has drawn reactions both online and within the industry, especially due to the viral image of his funeral poster, which contained a misspelling of his alias as “Mr. Jonh.” While the error sparked social media commentary, it has not overshadowed the impact he made in his role.
