U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited political controversy after publicly calling for the arrest of former President Barack Obama, escalating years of rhetoric between the two leaders.
In a series of posts shared on his Truth Social platform on January 29, 2026, Trump accused Obama of orchestrating what he described as a “coup attempt” against his presidency.
Trump alleged that Obama directed intelligence officials to fabricate claims of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election in order to undermine his victory and weaken public trust in American democracy.

Trump further amplified posts claiming that Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard had released what were described as “bombshell” documents related to the long-running Russia investigation.
One widely circulated post echoed commentary from Fox News host Jesse Watters, framing potential consequences as “accountability” rather than revenge, and concluded with a direct call for Obama’s arrest.
The accusations echo claims first raised in mid-2025, when Gabbard declassified documents alleging that officials during the Obama administration politicized intelligence surrounding Russian election interference.
Gabbard characterized the actions as a “treasonous conspiracy” and referred the matter to the Department of Justice.
However, no charges have been filed against Obama or other senior officials.
Trump has continued to amplify these allegations, including sharing AI-generated content depicting Obama’s arrest.

Independent analysts and fact-checkers, however, have noted that the released materials largely restate previously disputed partisan interpretations rather than introduce new evidence.
