A devastating road accident in Ghana’s Western Region has claimed the lives of at least 30 people after a fully loaded timber truck lost control and crashed into roadside shops and structures.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred when the truck, transporting large timber logs, veered off the road and overturned, causing the heavy load to fall directly onto stores and people operating along the roadside.
The impact flattened several structures instantly, trapping victims beneath the massive logs.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking, with traders and bystanders caught unaware as the truck crashed.
Many of the victims are believed to be shop owners, customers, and passersby who were going about their daily activities at the time of the accident.
Emergency responders, including the police, fire service, and local volunteers, were dispatched to the scene to assist in rescue operations.
However, due to the weight and size of the timber logs, rescue efforts were slow and difficult. Several victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while others were rushed to nearby health facilities with critical injuries.
In addition to the tragic loss of lives, the accident caused extensive damage to property.
Dozens of shops were destroyed, and goods worth thousands of cedis were lost, leaving many families devastated and without livelihoods.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Initial assessments suggest that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle, possibly due to brake failure, excessive speed, or poor road conditions.
The driver’s condition and status have not yet been officially confirmed.
This incident has reignited public concern over the safety of heavy-duty trucks on Ghana’s roads, particularly those transporting timber and other bulky loads through populated areas.
