TUC Sends Message to the Government on the tariff on both electricity and water.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has rejected the recently announced utility tariff increases and is calling on the government to immediately review the proposed 9 percent salary increment for public sector workers for 2026.

In a firm statement, the TUC warned that workers will not accept rising electricity and water tariffs without a corresponding increase in wages that reflects the growing cost of living.

According to the union, the 9 percent salary adjustment previously agreed upon is no longer adequate, given the burden that higher utility costs will impose on already struggling households.

The TUC emphasized that the current economic conditions marked by inflation, rising taxes, and increasing prices of goods and services make it necessary for the government to reconsider its stance on public sector pay.

The union described the tariff hikes as “harsh and insensitive,” and cautioned that failure to address workers’ concerns could lead to widespread industrial action.

“We cannot accept a situation where workers are expected to absorb the full impact of rising costs without fair compensation,” a TUC spokesperson said. “Government must engage with labour to review the wage structure in line with economic realities.”

The TUC has urged the government to return to the negotiation table and work toward a more equitable arrangement that protects the welfare of Ghanaian workers ahead of the 2026 fiscal year.
