In a significant military move, the United States has carried out an airstrike targeting ISIL (ISIS)-affiliated fighters in northwest Nigeria.
The operation, authorized by U.S. President Donald Trump, follows alarming reports of sustained and brutal attacks by the terrorist group on Christian communities in the region.
According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Defense, the precision airstrike was aimed at dismantling militant strongholds believed to be responsible for a string of violent attacks on civilians, particularly Christians, in parts of Sokoto and Zamfara States.

Intelligence reports indicated that ISIL-linked fighters had orchestrated a wave of executions, kidnappings, and raids on villages, leading to mass displacement and growing instability.
President Trump, addressing the nation, justified the military action by citing what he described as โa scale of religious persecution and slaughter not seen in decades.โ
He emphasized that the United States would not remain passive while extremist groups terrorize innocent populations under the guise of ideology.
โAmerica stands with the persecuted, especially those targeted for their faith,โ Trump said. โThese atrocities committed against innocent Christians are unacceptable, and we will use every means necessary to stop such evil.โ
The Nigerian government has yet to release an official statement regarding the strike, but regional security sources confirmed that explosions were heard in remote areas known to harbor armed militants.
Civilian casualties have not been confirmed at this time, though U.S. officials stated efforts were made to avoid collateral damage.
The strike marks a rare instance of direct U.S. military engagement on Nigerian soil, raising questions about sovereignty, security cooperation, and the future of counterterrorism efforts in West Africa.
It also underscores growing international concern over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeriaโs northwest and the broader Sahel region.

Human rights organizations have welcomed the move with caution, urging both the U.S. and Nigerian governments to prioritize the protection of civilians and to address the root causes of radicalization, including poverty, corruption, and lack of access to justice.
