The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested and remanded a suspect in connection with an alleged attempt to smuggle illicit substances out of Ghana using packaged food products.

Speaking in an interview on Angel TV with Saddick Adams on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, NACOC Deputy Director Twum-Barimah, Esq., disclosed that the suspect was apprehended at Kotoka International Airport after weeks of surveillance.

According to him, the individual allegedly concealed the substances in a consignment of packaged gari (dried cassava flakes) intended for export.

“We tracked his operations for some time and arrested him at the airport before he could transport the items abroad,” Twum-Barimah stated.

A second suspect has also been taken into custody, while a female accomplice has reportedly been arrested in connection with the case.

Investigators further revealed that the suspects allegedly had access to machinery within Ghana to facilitate their operations.

The management of the food packaging brand whose products were allegedly used has been invited to assist with investigations.

However, Twum-Barimah emphasized that the companies involved are not suspected of direct participation in the alleged criminal activity.

“Our investigations so far show that the individuals arrested are not connected to or managers of any of the packaged food companies whose products were used,” he clarified.

Despite repeated questions during the interview, NACOC declined to disclose the names of the brands, citing the need to protect reputations while investigations remain ongoing.

The Deputy Director also noted that the suspect allegedly used multiple Ghanaian products on different occasions to conceal the substances.
