The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has successfully secured the conviction of two individuals for robbery and related offenses following detailed investigations and a full trial at the Bekwai Circuit Court.
The convicted persons, identified as Francis Oppong (alias Kwame Abuu), a resident of Kyekyewere near Obuasi, and Francis Nyamekye (alias Amearo), were found guilty of multiple charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, aiding and abetment of robbery, and robbery—contrary to Sections 23(1), 20(1), and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The two were initially arraigned before the court on January 30, 2024. After nearly two years of legal proceedings, the court, presided over by His Honour Mr. Isaac Appeatu Esq., delivered its verdict on January 5, 2026. Both are currently serving their sentences at the Kumasi Central Prison.
The convictions stem from a violent robbery incident that occurred on December 16, 2023, in Kyekyewere near Obuasi, where the victim, a small-scale miner, was attacked at both his residence and mining site.
Investigations revealed that Francis Oppong, who lived near the victim, monitored his movements and relayed information to the robbery gang.
During the attack, the robbers assaulted the victim, who sustained injuries.
They made away with a pump action gun, a Huawei mobile phone valued at GH¢1,200, eighteen pounds of gold worth approximately GH¢100,000, and GH¢2,000 in cash.
Further intelligence led to the arrest of Francis Nyamekye at a private hospital in Obuasi, where he was receiving treatment for gunshot wounds believed to have been sustained during a failed robbery attempt.
