Diplomatic Steps are being taken to protect Ghanaians in South Africa – High Commissioner

Mr. Benjamin Kofi Quarshie, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, has assured Ghanaians that diplomatic steps are being taken to bring the rising tensions and xenophobic attacks in South Africa under control.

In an interview on Adomradio Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Benjamin stated that most of the South Africans have taken the law into their own hands as they escalated the rising tension.

He further stated that the Commission is handling the issue diplomatically to ensure all Ghanaians living in South Africa are protected from the attacks.

He added that due to the happenings in the country most Ghanaians operating shops there have closed as several attacks have occurred against them by the South Africans.

He went on to state that most people have made their wards stop schooling because the tension keeps rising, causing fear and panic among parents.

Mr. Benjamin added that since he took office there registered of Ghanaians living in South Africa is close to 17, 000 and not 50,000 as it has been circulating around the media.

“When I took over, we did registration of Ghanaians in South Africa. So far, we have close to 16,000 to 17,000, but we are still updating the database,” he said.

In view of this, the High Commissioner added that the Commission has embarked on an outreach program to register Ghanaians living in rural areas.

The comment made by the High Commissioner is in relation to the growing tension of xenophobic attacks on Ghanaians living in South Africa.
