Sam George Expresses Relief Following the Passage of the Anti-LGBTQ bill

Honourable Sam Nortey George has expressed his relief and gratitude following the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill in parliament.

He explained that the bill’s passage would not have been possible without strong leadership in Ghana’s parliament.

Speaking on JoyFM, he said he was a ‘relieved man’ after Ghana’s legislation passed the anti-LGBTQ bill seeking to criminalize same sex related activities.

He credited the leadership of the parliament, particularly the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for his decisive role in ensuring the controversial bill was passed in parliament.

He commended the Speaker of Parliament for his unwavering support of passing the bill and further appreciated the members of the committee for the handling of the bill through to parliament.

The Member of Parliament also addressed the criticism of him after his statement on pressuring the government to sign the Anti-LGBTQ bill describing it as a relief.

He further explained that the Parliament’s approval of the bill marks the beginning of a new phase of the process, with the legislation expected to undergo parliamentary administrative procedure formally transmitted to the president.

He stated that the transmission of the bill is expected to begin in the coming weeks after which proponents of the legislation would expect the President to decide on assent.
