GNFS Rescues Trapped Driver in Sawla Road Crash Involving Maize Truck

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully rescued a truck driver who was trapped in a severe road accident near the Sawla Weighing Bridge along the Sawla–Wa highway in the early hours of Friday, January 2, 2026.

The driver, who was pinned inside a mangled DAF truck with registration number AS 1852-T, was rescued alive by personnel from the Sawla–Tuna–Kalba District Command, with support from the Savannah Regional Headquarters Rescue Team.

He was later transported to the hospital by ambulance for medical treatment.

According to reports, the maize-laden truck was en route from Wa to Bole with seven male occupants when it veered off the road, crashed into a tree, and overturned into a nearby bush, resulting in extensive damage to the vehicle’s front section and trapping the driver inside.

Six of the passengers were rescued earlier by members of the public and rushed to the Sawla District Hospital for medical attention.

Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The GNFS has urged road users to exercise caution and adhere to safety regulations, especially on long-distance routes.
